SEO-Safe Website Redesign Checklist
For business owners planning a redesign of an existing, indexed website.
Work top to bottom. Every item below maps to a stage in the redesign process diagram — skipping the audit or redirect steps is what causes the traffic drop most owners blame on the new design.
Before anything changes
- Export a full list of indexed URLs
- Record current rankings for your top 20 keywords
- Note monthly organic traffic and form/call volume
- Identify the pages that currently produce leads
- Take a complete file and database backup
- Confirm you control the domain registrar and hosting logins
Planning the new structure
- Approve the new page map and URL structure
- Write an old-to-new redirect for every removed or moved URL
- Keep proven headlines and copy that already converts
- Decide the single primary CTA for each page
- Plan location and service pages separately, not merged
While building
- Build on staging with noindex enabled
- Carry over title tags and meta descriptions, improved not deleted
- Preserve or upgrade existing schema markup
- Compress images and set explicit dimensions
- Keep phone numbers click-to-call on mobile
Before launch
- Test every redirect returns a 301, not a 302 or 404
- Submit test entries through every form
- Verify analytics and conversion tracking fire
- Check the site on phone, tablet and desktop
- Run a keyboard-only pass over navigation and forms
- Remove noindex from staging settings before cutover
First 90 days after launch
- Resubmit the sitemap in Search Console
- Request indexing for priority URLs
- Watch coverage errors weekly
- Compare rankings to your recorded baseline at 30, 60 and 90 days
- Compare form and call volume to pre-launch numbers
- Fix any Core Web Vitals regressions flagged in Search Console
